Celebrities are people too, or so we’ve been told. Whether or not it’s true, Americans love to think of them as something more than just people. We are fascinated by them. Fascinated by the choices they make, the company they keep and whether or not they succeed or fail. We watch them on the way up and watch them even more closely on the way down. We scrutinize them in every way, mindful of the mistakes they make even more than we are of the successes they create.

So why are we are so fascinated by celebrity culture? Certainly part of it is the media, which reports on their actions as though the world’s fate depended on it. But on the other end of the stick, isn’t it us who decides that People magazine sells more copies than Time or that Inside Edition gets better ratings than the local news?

Yes, we are indeed the ones responsible, and no one seems willing to apologize for it. Why should we? Celebrities, because of their status, have the ability to do, see and experience things we simply can’t. How many posh beachfront homes in Malibu do you own? Same here. How many starlets or Hollywood hunks have you taken out for a night on the town? Ditto on this end.

But there’s more to it than just the money, the cars, the mansions and the parties. Part of it is that we do want to believe they are just like we are. We’re looking for kinks in the publicist armor. When we find it, we generally sympathize. Take Jennifer Aniston’s split with Brad Pitt, for example. How many of you sympathized with TV’s “Rachel” and bought into the theory that Angelina Jolie was a home wrecker? Now how many of you who answered affirmatively would care as much if it happened to your next door neighbor?

The reason for that is simple. We watch them. We grow up with them. We invite them into our homes every night and more often than not, they never fail to entertain. It’s natural for us to care about these people we’ve never met, because in a way, we have met, and through their acting, songwriting or performing, we feel we know them well.

I ask this because I’m slowly finding myself knowing ridiculous facts about celebrities. Being flooded more and more with gossip about people who don’t mean anything to me. I was thinking of making a change and completely staving off gossip mags, fashion mags etc.

An audience creates a celebrity. Many individuals have starred in movies or performed at concerts without gaining celebrity status. If people care about the comings and goings of an individual and the media picks up on this interest, news and tabloid coverage will increase. This creates a celebrity. If nobody cares about a singer’s shopping trips or political message, it is a safe bet that individual will not be stalked by paparazzi and won’t be gracing the covers of magazines. Simply, celebrities are selected.

Certain websites have constructed an algorithm to demonstrate the popularity of celebrities. This algorithm and the celebrity’s popularity equate to a market price, much like a stock price. Members of the site are able to buy and sell celebrities for their personal portfolios and if the celebrity increases in value - both popularity and price, the portfolio value increases. If a celebrity begins to lose value, he is undesirable and dumped.

There can be no clearer message about not only the value of celebrities, but also the ownership of celebrities. Just as celebrities in a portfolio can create a return for investors, those same investors take the time to research the celebrities in forums, news articles, and blogs. This research and drive for information increases the celebrity’s popularity and price. When a celebrity fails to generate news, or generates too much bad publicity, the public will simply lose interest, the celebrity loses value, and stardom begins to fade.

Celebrity obsession is certainly nothing new. If anything you would have figured we as a society would have become more accustomed to and quite bored with celebrities by now. As far back as you can go in history you will see that we have made celebrities almost royalty in the sense that not only does our society need to hear and see their every move and action of these celebrities but large corporations are aware of the fact that we trust the opinions and endorsement of these celebrities more then we trust our own. Turn on your television and you will be bombarded with celebrities selling you everything from fast food to weight loss pills. Can you believe the irony of all of this? We as a society support these celebrities to such and extent that they are now millionaires yet we now put them in a position to make even more money by us purchasing the products they promote.

Do we all really want to be celebrities? Well, the answer is yes and no. The fact of the matter is not many of us are talented enough to excel in sports or the entertainment world and a lot of us would not care to be bothered with the burdens that come with the lives of celebrities. However, each and every one of us, whether it is at work or in our homes, do contribute and would love to feel appreciated for what it is we do on a daily basis.

Celebrities have a huge impact on peoples’ lives in the world today. A lot of people can’t go through one day without checking the web, or their favorite celebrity magazine to read about the latest celebrity gossip, and the most up to the minute juicy tidbit of news about their favorite famous person. Celebrities can range from an actor or actress, singer, writer, movie producer or director, or reality show contestant. There are also people who are famous for “being famous”, such as Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie.

Most people just gobble up any item of “news” that they can get about their favorite celebrities. It is too easy to focus on someone else’s problems, so you don’t have to give attention to your own difficulties! What these people don’t think about is the fact that the more they read about and purchase information about these celebrities, the less privacy these people have in their lives. It’s really no wonder that the majority of celebrities out there today mess up do often - they are under a serious amount of pressure!

When someone finally reaches “celebrity status” in today’s world, it is great at first. They start to get recognized on the street every now and again, and every once in a while, they will get a meal for free just because the restaurant owner or manager is a big fan of the television show that they appear on. After a while, however, after they have climbed higher on the celebrity ladder, it gets to be not so much fun for these people. The paparazzi follow them everywhere they go, usually taking very awful and embarrassing pictures that cause fans to think that they are anorexic or pregnant or near death. The paparazzi don’t just follow them on the street, but they also hide in trees near these celebrities’ homes, taking pictures of their private, personal lives and printing them for the entire world to see the next day.

Being in the public eye so much definitely has a huge impact on the personal lives of our celebrities. When you think about it, if you could not leave your house to take a walk, or go to the local café for a latte without being swamped by cameras and reporters, your life wouldn’t be much of a life either! Celebrities also receive phone calls every now and again from worried friends and relatives who see the tabloids in the grocery store and think that their friend or relative is dead or terminally ill, or about to split up with their spouse. The tabloids and magazines pretty much have a 100% record of being completely untrue, but people still worry!

Even when celebrities want to get married, they sometimes have to choose a spouse who is also in the public eye, because when someone is not used to the cameras and craziness, it can be too much for them to handle, along with a new marriage. Also, any famous person who dates a non famous person cannot help but wonder if their significant other would want to be with them if they were not a celebrity. When celebrities do get married and have children, life is harder for their families as well because of their parents’ celebrity status.

Some people just love to gossip, but they know if they talk about their neighbors or coworkers that it is likely to get them in trouble if these people find out. However, Jennifer Lopez is unlikely to find out that you feel she spent too much money on her wedding! Gossiping about celebrities can be a way to socialize and have fun with friends. Many friends follow the same television programs and movie actors. Often when you have a great celebrity gossip tidbit, they are excited and thrilled to hear this juicy piece of news.

Many people also like celebrity gossip because it is very glamorous. Celebrities spend money the way water flows down the sink drain. They have three thousand dollar handbags and diamond studded cell phones. Their dogs have real jewelry. They rent private islands for family vacations. When you hear a piece of celebrity gossip, it is usually filled with glamor, intrigue and involves spending more money than most of us will ever see. Many celebrities lead glamorous and exciting lives. Talking about these celebrities can be exciting and thinking about what they do is a great way to daydream about such a glamorous lifestyle. While most of us will never live this type of lifestyle, we certainly can talk about it through the tales of celebrity gossip.
